12th Istanbul Biennial for Contemporary Art, 2011. “Tin Soldiers” by Ala Younis.

Kuwaiti-based Ala Younis has taken nine separate toy soldier armies and created an incredible installation for the Istanbul Art Biennial 2011. They are hand painted to represent the military outfits of Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria and Turkey. The pieces are produced in numbers proportional to those of active troops in 2010. A total of 12,235 soldiers at a scale of 1:200 are arranged in a systematic platform.
